Something I have noticed abundantly in the world of fitness and Personal Training is the approach that many bring to their pursuit of health and wellness. It is in just few words, a very non-committal, non-directional work ethic. Most of the common goals that people bring to the table when starting their journey is simply to lose weight, or look better, to look good in a bathing suit, get rid of belly fat, so forth and so on. Now don't get me wrong, these goals can make a person improve their lives drastically and have a great impact on their health and well being. However, what I have noticed with this approach is what we all despise in people when they tell you that they are starting their fitness journey... "how long they stick with it." Becoming temporarily motivated and accomplishing the bare minimum needed to be "healthy" is a simple process and the results desired and not too difficult to obtain. Becoming committed and consistent with exercise and fitness requires a bit more investment than the typical goals of fitness.

Every day, the majority of the world gets up too early and puts in too many hours into a job that they find unfulfilling and unsatisfactory. They do this day in and day out, not saying a word and putting in a good effort in order to earn as much of their potential as they can. Why do people do this? Willingly place themselves in unpleasant situations and stress 5,6, even 7 days a week. The reasons are plentiful. Pay the bills, save for retirement, earn a promotion, buy a new house, and the list goes on. There is a real purpose to accomplish something, a driving force of emotional response that depends on their effort and efficiency at work. They perform their best at work, and provide the best quality of life financially.

Here's my take, exercise is no different than other aspects of life. Performance oriented training is an important scheme to implement in your pursuit of health and wellness because it creates a much deeper sense of commitment and consistency in order to perform at your best. When you train to perform, the goal makes your body adapt and strengthen according to the performance that you train for. While in the process of training for performance goals, your body will transform and become the machine that is required to achieve the desired outcome. When you train like a runner, a weight lifter, a swimmer, or any kind of event specialty, your body will adapt to make itself optimally efficient at performing that skill making your body not just looking better, but doing more and becoming more capable. Not only does your body achieve greater results, but striving to continually improve on your abilities and performance gives more reason to continue with a healthy lifestyle.

Take your training a step farther. Lose the weight for what reason? Why do you want a lower body fat percentage? Give your training purpose to extend your longevity and capacity to do more as an individual. Don't just be a pretty sight on the side of the road, but an impressive machine with an incredible capacity of strength. And create a better reason to stick with a better lifestyle.

Train with purpose, it is always in season to choose a skill, an event, or even a sport to pursue. Get after it and accomplish more!

Every Day... A Little Stronger
