One of the greatest methods to invoke change in people is by example. Anyone can study, learn, acquire all the knowledge there is to know about a certain subject, but who is it that receives the most attention. He who does what he knows, not just knowing that certain things work, but proving in oneself that their knowledge is truth. To be frank right off the bat, this post is going to be a bit of a rant, but a rant that needs to be said to encourage a change in the fitness culture.

Too many people in our gyms, online and writing articles know too much. The problem isn't that they are intelligent people who know their subject, the problem is that they talk and talk and talk and do not walk the walk. If there's anything that upsets me most is when I walk into a gym and the guy trying to sell me training packages as my personal trainer is obviously a non-athletic person who has no real life experience in training other than what he/she learned in the classroom at their local University. I am a firm believer that Personal trainers and coaches need to be educated in their disciplines, but I also am a firm believer that they have to have been a athlete having done what they say, or be presently applying their principles in their personal lives. Fitness is not just something you can teach, there is a certain spark and quality that comes from having personal experience in the field and that quality transfers to your clients or those around you. Showing that you are or were an exceptional athlete goes a long way into not just informing people about a certain lifestyle, but creating a change of lifestyle in these people.

Laziness, Complacency, Obesity, Malnutrition, and all other anti-fitness symptoms is something that needs to be fought against in our society today. It is an epidemic that needs to be addressed quickly and aggressively. The greatest way to cause change in others is to first change yourself, and build yourself to be a warrior against this epidemic. Don't kid yourself and think that you can read a thousand books and be sufficiently prepared to contribute to this fight. Too many times when I take on the challenge of developing workout routines for people do I hear the question... "What have you done?" Which is in other words... "Why should I listen to you?"

The moral of the story, when someone asks you, what you have done... Be able to answer! Don't just exercise the mind, but the body as well!

-End of Rant
