Hopefully you've read the recap of my Journey to Ironman Calgary... In a nut shell it was a fantastic learning experience. But now the time has come to get back to work.
The goals are set, the plan is in place, and now it's up to me to put it all together. I'm going to be shooting for the Galveston Texas Ironman 70.3 next year. That gives me a little under a year to get prepared. I learned from this last weekend a lot of things and also what I am capable of. The number one thing... never giving up.
So now comes the work! Time to let the numbers and the progress do the talking. When all is said and done about pursuing any fitness or health goal, it's the work that counts. And to get more than what others do, you have to do more and work harder.
"Champions aren't made in gyms.Champions are made from something deep inside them- a desire, a dream, a vision. They have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill." -Muhammed Ali
When you are about to embark on your own journey to some fitness achievement, you are undoubtedly going to come come across a immense amount of information about your training routine and what you should be doing. So many people have so many great ideas, but there are some key points to consider when choosing which is right for you and your goals.
-Specificity: This is talking about specific work towards your goal. The training sessions you participate in should be exercises that are designed to enhance your ability to accomplish your goal.
-Progressive Overload: Doing the same exercises over and over again will only take you so far. This principle talks about always maintaining a system of progressions so your body continually progresses.
-Rest/ Recovery: Every routine should include some kind of recovery system and implementation. Muscles are built after the workout, not in the gym!
-Individuality: There is no reason that an average joe new to the gym who wants to improve his 5K run time needs to be on a plan designed for a professional distance runner. Your plan should be at your level to take you beyond your current capabilities
-Variation: Simply stated, a program will only be effective for so long, you should always switch the design of the program every so often, after the adaptations have been achieved or become stagnant.
-Reversibility: Just to keep in mind, if you stop your program, your muscles will revert back to their original conditions. It takes less work to maintain a level of fitness, but it will reverse itself with no work at all.
